Quilt Circle of Friends annual party

In Quilt Circle of Friends, we have a tradition of skipping our December meeting and having our holiday party in January. Monday was the eve for our party.

This annual gathering always starts with a potluck. I made ham balls, Trish made cheesy potatoes and everyone else brought side dishes. It was perfect - - - and yummy.

Following dinner, we shared some Show and Tell. These are appliance covers Bonnie made for her kitchen.
Bonnie just finished up this bright little quilt.

And she showed us this panel quilt she finished up, reminiscent of her days as a school teacher, beautifully hand quilted.

These are the blocks for our Barn Quilt Sign BOM. Quilt Circle did these blocks as a group project this past year. Here is Trish's version of them all set together with a sweet little shadow border on each block.
Lonnie showed all her most recent shop sample quilt, Shoji Screens. So bright and happy.
Marti finished up this quilt top that was donated to the Des Moines Quilt Guild for their charity project. She pointed out how pretty a quilt can be, even when the fabrics and colors are so eclectic.
And this is a quilt Marti put together using a stack of "found" blocks. The units are all like a snowball block but with cheater corners on just two corners rather than 4. By making half dark with light corners and half light with dark corners, you create this design. Such a pretty quilt to study.

Then we moved on to our Get Er Done quilts. This annual party is the deadline for completion of these projects. Many of these have been posted along the way and here they are one last time.

From names of those who completed their Get Er Done quilts, we drew for 3 - $25 gift certificates:

  • Abbie Allen
  • Theresa Hane
  • Deb Semmens

In accordance with the contract signed at the beginning of last year, anyone who did not complete their Get Er Done project needed to have a really, really, really good reason. Here is Joyce explaining. "My name is Joyce and I'm easily distracted".

Jackie O shared these blocks given to her by a friend to complete a few moons ago. She is pledging these as her Get Er Done project for 2018.

2018 Get Er Cone contracts are due by our February meeting.

Then it was on to our holiday game. This year, we did the stuffed socks again. Members were asked to bring a pair of socks and stuff one with quilting notions and goodies. Here are a few.

We played a little game to exchange.

Children in the room, please look away. This sock includes a naughty word. :) :) :)

and then each put on one new socks and posed for this picture.

As always, it was a great evening with my Quilt Circle of Friends and thank you to Jackie O for taking and sharing these pics.

Sunday Sewday

It's been a while since I posted a Sunday Sewday. Today was a good one because I finished two projects!

I put the binding on our new Strip Club quilt and I added the last border to our Barn Quilt Sign BOM

I can't post pictures because these quilts will both be in our big reveal, February 17, at Fresh Beginnings.

I talked to Judy Williams yesterday and she thinks she will have 3 rows of our new applique BOM quilt top put together to show you on Feb 17 as well.

Make sure you have your calendar marked for that day. What the heck, go ahead and write it in ink!

Our Condolences

We were sad to hear of the death of retreat friend, Gwen Graw. Here she is on the left with two of her best quilting buds, Denise and Susan. Gwen came to our fall Ladies of the Lake Quilt retreat for many years and we will miss her friendly disposition. Our condolences go out to her family and friends. May she be quilting in heaven.

My feedsack quilt

This little quilt is on display in the feedsack quilt exhibit at the Iowa Quilt Museum.  It has a story:

My mother gave me a whole suitcase of feedsacks that she had been gifted from an older quilter friend. I have always been hesitant to cut into these precious sacks.

However, about 20 years ago, I was part of a small group that did a Round Robin project. We each made a quilt center and put it in a paper bag along with a selection of fabrics for the next person to use in any way they wanted to.

I made the yellow applique center of this quilt and included it in my bag with several of my feeedsacks. It was passed from one member to the next, each adding to the center, and this is the quilt top that came back to me.

I always really cherish quilts that include the work of many hands.

New exhibit at Iowa Quilt Museum - Today through April 15

We're really excited about our next exhibit of...

Feed Sack Quilts!

January 3rd - April 15th, 2018

Curated by Linzee Kull McCray of Iowa City

Feed sacks, flour sacks, seed sacks—cotton bags of all sorts provided the raw material for quilts both past and present. In addition to quilts, this exhibition tells the story of feed sacks through advertisements, ephemera, and the sacks themselves. Artist-bound copies of "Feed Sacks: The Colourful History of a Frugal Fabric" comprise an additional exhibition element.

Meet curator Linzee McCray at the
Feed Sack Quilt opening reception

January 13th, 4-6pm
