A message from the Iowa Quilt Museum

Hello all!

We're in need of more help this weekend - 1 person for each shift Friday, 2 for each shift Saturday, 1 for Sunday afternoon and 1 for Monday afternoon.

Actually, nearly the same is true for the next weekend as well (and the one after that!).

The SignUp Genius can be found HERE. You can email me as well and I can get you signed up.

Thanks all!

Sunday Sew Day!

I pretty much sewed all day Sunday. It was fun because I didn't have any deadline sewing to do. I could just pick up what ever needed finished.

This was a shop demo I cut out quite some time ago. Now that I wanted to sew it up, there didn't seem to be enough parts.

Friend Lorna suggested I try this setting instead, using less 60 degree triangles. Good save! Thanks, Lorna.
I had also cut these 60 degree pieces and then decided it didn't work as well so just sewed them together to make this table mat. Both items will likely go into our annual sale for the library.

State Fair Winner recognized

This year, we sponsored 3rd place winners at the Iowa State Fair, recognizing that third place quilts in large categories are still really awesome. Emily Vardeman came in yesterday with the Gift Certificate she won. Here is her quilt, 3rd place in the large quilt category.
This was a block of the month quilt designed by Leila Gardunia. The inspiration for the design is the quilt blocks that adorn the Jacobson Building on the Iowa State Fair grounds. Isn't this fantastic? You can read more about the designer at sewnbyleila.blogspot

This is the quilter, Emily V. on the left with friend Jessie Z, both members of the Des Moines Modern Quilt Guild.  Nice to meet you, Emily. Thanks for coming in.

BOM news

Here she is, our Grunge BOM all quilted (thank you Deb Semmens) and bound. For members of this BOM, we are offering these finishing kits at a 20% discount making it just $59 for the pattern, setting fabrics and binding, 74" x 96". Want it larger? Just let us know and we can help. Reserve one now for a deposit of $35 and pick it up October 1 or after.

In our current Strip Club project, customers will end up with 4 extra blocks. Here's an idea - - - make a quick runner to match.

We put this holiday print on the back of ours so it can be used for two seasons.

Sunday Sewday

I slept in a bit and did a couple hours of yard work but then it was off to the quiet peace (piece) of my sewing room.

This is from a quilt as you go pattern, Fun and Done. I added the piano key borders. It really was fun to make and is a great pattern for teaching beginners. You can create a quilt without having to do the quilting or binding.  Baby steps! And a very sturdy quilt. This will be added to my stack to donate to the nursing home where quilts are used and washed, and washed and washed.
I also finished up several small things I had started. The strippy block here was from the Fun and Done demo. I just finished it up into a trivet.
I also had enough time to start machine quilting this happy sunny quilt, a shop sample made for us by Carol P.

Quilt for a future fireman - - -

Jenny O. made us another shop sample of Strata by B's Caprice. This is a great pattern to use when you want to feature fabric like this firehouse line.

Here are the first 2 blocks in the Barn Block BOM we are doing in Quilt Circle of Friends. These 16" blocks replicate actual barn quilt blocks. It's a 9 month BOM we are testing now and will offer to all  down the road - - - likely next year.

A gift.

I was recently at a retreat with the online group, Iowa Quilters. Member, Jo Anne, made everyone a luggage tag. Isn't this sweet?

Julia's Snowman Quilt

Julia's quilt has feet! She finished this panel to take to a friend they are visiting in Canada this week. Nice, right? PS: We have this panel and border fabric in the shop now :)

Out with the old - - -

Dwight Best, also known as D'Best, came today to hang our new barn quilt block on our little red barn. We laughed about him pulling in with his trailer for our little job but he was on his way to a bigger job.

You can see why I was excited to paint a new sign in our recent class. Our old one, made by Laura Brenner, lived a nice long life but was really showing her age.

This is a job we could have mastered ourselves but, the screws were in too tight so rather than strip them trying to get them out, we just gave Dwight a call.

Sweet! Thanks, Dwight!

May I have this dance?

Happy Anniversary to my best friend.

A Day to Celebrate!

Brooke and Camryn are 4 months old and they are finally coming home from the hospital. These little miracles (and great nieces) weighed in at 2# and under, over 3 months premature.

Aren't they beautiful! Can't wait to smell their little heads.

Sunday Sewday

I did spend a little time in my sewing room on Sunday. I put the final borders on two quilts that you will be seeing soon.

On Friday, however, I had fun stitching with a group of gals from Iowa Quilters online group. This retreat included a challenge to make a lap quilt using a block pattern that has the same first letter in it's name as your own first name. Example - my quilt used the Jewel Box block.
Isn't this a lovely collection of quilts? I was the lucky winner that got to bring all of the quilts home to donate to a facility of my choosing. What a great gift!

Iowa Quilt Museum in Winterset seeks volunteers

The Iowa Quilt Museum is seeking volunteers who can greet our visitors, sell admission and gift shop items, and act as docents in the gallery. Extensive quilting knowledge is not necessary and our cash register system is remarkably easy!  We ask our volunteers to work either 3.5 or 7 hour shifts from once a month up to once a week. To show our thanks, each volunteer is gifted with a complimentary annual membership to the Iowa Quilt Museum.

We would be so pleased to have more representation in our museum from outside of Madison County! Perhaps you would like to follow the model of the Centerville Guild that has committed to covering one day per month. They gather 3 or 4 from their group and make it a ladies day out by visiting our amazing quilt shops (just down the street) and the numerous other shops on the Winterset Town Square while they are here.

For more information or to sign up as volunteers, contact our museum director, Megan Barrett at director@iowaquiltmuseum.org or 515-462-5988. And if you know of others who might be interested, feel free to pass his information along!

Antique Store Liquidation

Are you an antique buff? Our neighbor, Garden Gate Antiques, is liquidating their inventory this weekend, Saturday 10 am to 4 pm.

July Quilt Circle of Friends!

After a little quilty news, Quilt Circle of Friends shared their show and tell.
Diane W. showed these two pictures (above and below) of the 2' x 2' barn quilts she and her daughter Susan painted in our recent class.

Diane also shared her interpretation of our animal row quilt project. She reduced her animal block patterns to make the smaller animal blocks. The names of the blocks in each row are all related to the animals as well.  As example,  Geese with Geese Chase Blocks -- Puss in the Corner -- - Cow Path -- - Etc.

Theresa H. is always making baby quilts for the new arrivals in her ever growing family. This is a panel. Isn't it adorable?

Margaret B, our champion of getting things done, has finished up another very pretty quilt.

Lorna C. has been having fun making trivets. Very cute.

Lorna also brought the barn sign she created in class to show Quilt Circle, her own design.

This is actually a 16" block made from fabric. This is block #1 of a new project we are just starting in club. Each month for nine months, I will have a barn quilt block pattern for members.

This shows our cloth block with the wooden quilt block that inspired it.

Next was a demo of a quilt as you go string quilt.

Stitch and flip strips to the batting and backing of each block.

Trim away the excess from the strips and batting, leaving the backing intact. Then join the blocks to each other, pressing the backing under twice and topstitching down. Next month I'll show the secondary design created by joining all of these blocks.

We closed our evening with cake to celebrate the anniversary of the shop and welcome the beginning of year #15!

It's always a treat to gather with my Quilt Circle of Friends. Thank you to you all and especially to Jackie O. for being our photographer.
