Southern Green Beans

This is the green bean recipe Cal and I made recently. We used a lot more new potatoes.  It probably had more potatoes than green beans but it was quite yummy!

Another house guest

This past weekend it was 8 year old Calvin's turn to come.  He wanted to spend some of our time together baking and so we did.  Cinnamon rolls, rhubarb bread, angel biscuits with sausage gravy and fresh green beans with new potatoes.

He was a natural in the kitchen and so very helpful.

We also watched a show about detectives so, on our way to meet his folks today, he wore my sunglasses and we pretended we were tracking villains.

Charity Quilt Fabric

I have a retired quilter friend who has found it necessary to cut back on her quilting due to a vision problem.

She gave me a bunch of fabric for charity quilts.  I have 4 groupings of 20 fat quarters each that would work nicely together.

There is also an assortment of fall prints and of Christmas prints.

If you do charity quilts or know of a group that does, please contact me at adel.quilting@gmail.com.

Mother's Day Weekend trip

Just home from another fun weekend with my Chicago daughter, Brook. That bundle of fur on her lap is Phil, her labradoodle.

Mason Jar Salad

Here's a peek inside daughter Willow's fridge. These are quart jars with all the fixings for a lovely salad, ready to invert onto a serving plate.

She likes to keep things like this made up to offer nutritious options for their hectic life style with three little athletes.

There are recipes and instructions at the website andianne.com - search for 6 Great Mason Jar Salad Recipes.

Basically, you start with the salad dressing on the bottom. Next layer on the most stable vegetables (as carrots, broccoli) and beans. Next is couscous, quinoa or chicken. Now add the more weepy fruits and/or veggies (tomatoes, strawberries or blueberries).  Next is the salad greens with crumbled bacon, pine nuts or almond slivers sprinkled on top.

Almost too pretty to eat, aren't they?

Based on the April average high temp in central Iowa of 51.2, our color this month is kind of a soft blush.

Sunday Sewday

Sunday, I finished up this little quilt top. If you recall, a couple days ago I posted this as a pieced top with a white background.

It bothered me a little that, while I like white and aqua, the gal I am giving this to is more partial to earth tones and teal so, before I machine quilted it, I gave it a little bath in a pot of hot brewed black tea.  That did a great job of taking the bright white out of it.

If you zoom in, you can see this background fabric is now a creamy light tan.  Much better. The tea staining turned all of the colored pieces a little darker as well. Just what it needed.

  1. Steep 4 bags of black tea in 4 C of boiling water for 5 minutes.
  2. Completely wet the quilt top in clean water.
  3. Remove the tea bags and dip the wet quilt top in the brew.
  4. Stir it around a bit and remove when at the required shade of darkness. It only takes a few seconds.
  5. Rinse in clear water. Some of the color will rinse out
Tip: Best to remove from brew before it gets too dark. You can always put the quilt top back in the brew if you decide later it's not dark enough.

Practicing my curve piecing, I made this little wall hanging today.  It will be a birthday gift.

Here's my plan for hanging. After quilting, I will add a pocket on the back top edge and slide this piece of metal measure tape in. I have rounded the ends so it won't tear through the fabric.

Then, I will give a 3M magnet with the gift. You apply it to the wall with 3M tape so no nail hole required.  You can secure it with a nail if hanging something quite heavy but it won't be necessary for this wall hanging.
