Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all! We will be closed on Wednesday, January 1 for the holiday. Watch for lots of "new stuff" coming right after that!

January 10: One Block Wonder Panel Class, 10 am to noon. $25 or FREE with purchase of kit.

January 11: Central Iowa Free Quilt Society meets at the Adel Library. Come to stitch all day, starting at 9 am, or come for just the meeting at 1 pm.

January 23 and 24:  Open Sew at the Adel Library - 10 am until the last stitch is made each day.  Note this is a later in the month than usual due to availability of the library space. 

February 15:  Fresh Beginnings Party - Our annual party to kick off our 2020 Block of the Month programs.

And watch for more classes held at the shop in 2020 as we remodel for more classroom space.

Purple Bag End of Year Drawing

Each month, we draw one name from the prize drawing slips that are dropped in the Purple Bag and we save the rest.  Then toward the end of December, we put them all back in the Purple Bag and draw 12 more names.

Quilt Sandwich

I spent one day with little Olive this week as she recuperated from a tonsillectomy. Notice she is laying on one quilt with another quilt on top, a snuggly quilt sandwich. 

Sunday Sewday

Here's 3 quilts made from Frank's old flannel shirts. I have worked on them off and on for the last couple years. There's nothing like a holiday deadline to get them done - - - Jackson, Olivia and Calvin.

Found and Finished!

This is a quilt Marti shared at Open Sew this week. A few of the Perry Piecemakers worked on finishing up this quilt top for a local quilter's widow.  What a gift!

They finished all the cross-stitch and then Marti machine quilted it. The big challenge was removing all of the pre-stamped pattern from the quilt top.

OOOOpen Sew!!! is this week, Thursday and Friday at the Adel Library. Grab your stuff and join us each day at 10 am and sew until the last stitch of the day is made.

Quilt Show Sunday

Sunday, December 8

Don't miss this annual event in the sanctuary of the Adel First Christian Church. Soup and Dessert will be served in the lower level. Show is 1 to 4 pm. Soup and dessert is 11 am to 2 pm. Dessert will continue to be served until 4 pm.

Volunteers needed

The group sponsoring the holiday home tour in Adel on Sunday is looking for volunteers to help greet guests as they arrive at any one of the 5 homes. They are offering volunteers a free tour either before or after their shift. If you are interested, you can go to this website to see the remaining vacancies and sign up.

Leora's Letters

This is a true story of 5 Dallas County brothers that served during WWII as documented by letters sent to and received from them.

Their mother, Leora, kept all of the letters and passed them down through the generations to her granddaughter, Joy. In her attempt to make sure the story is never forgotten, Joy has organized the letters and spun them together in a narrative of history all should read.

These young men on the book cover are also the featured artwork on this years Freedom Rock in Adair County.

Joy will be in the shop Friday evening, December 6, from 5 to 8 pm to autograph books. I will retain copies to sell in the shop. This is a wonderful holiday gift idea.

Book Signing Dec 6

Exciting news! Joy Neal Kidney (my cousin) will be in the shop Friday evening, December 6, during the Adel Holiday Open House for a book signing of her just released book, Leora's Letters.

This is a true story based on her Dallas Co, Iowa family's WWII letters, documenting a story of love and loss.

Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday - what's it all about. Here is an excerpt for Farm Bureau Financial Service. They say it well:

For small business owners, their business is not just a business. To them, it is an extension of who they are. Giving the local businesses within your community a chance is crucial to not only their survival, but to give them an opportunity to win you over as a customer. 

This year, step out of your comfort zone and stop by your local bakery, restaurant, coffee shop, or boutique and support your neighborhood store rather than shopping a national chain. Shopping local matters because it affects the entire community. More money spent at local stores means more money stays within the community. This not only helps schools and other organizations through taxes, but small businesses are usually the organizations that support local sports teams, charities and events. The community wins as a whole, but the individuals that took a chance and made their dream a reality win as well.

We met in the shop on the third Monday of November. After sharing family news and quilt shop news, we started around the circle with our Show and Share.
