Quilt Circle September meeting

We started our evening admiring the heart blocks we gathered for a couple members who recently lost a husband/grandfather.

Then we shared the blocks we are making for our Barn Quilt Block BOM.

Here is Margaret's Block #2
These blocks finishs 16", oversized to mimic barn quilts. Lonnie is holding my block #3 here.
Lonnie's Block #3. She is using teals, purples and black in her blocks.

Lonnie - Block #2. For this month, we did 4 sets of Flying Geese units using the FGx4 method which netted us 16 units. We used 8 in this block and have 8 more to use in future blocks. Notice we used two of the extra units in block #3.

Here is Diane with block #2. She is making her blocks with Shot Cloth. What is Shot Cloth you ask? It's woven cotton created with one color in the warp and another in the weft. It makes for a very subtle woven look.
Then it was time for everybody's favorite - - - show and share.
Marti shared a poster for the Des Moines quilt show, coming October 5 through 8. This is the Des Moines Guild raffle quilt, meticulously machine quilted by Marti herself!
Lonnie shared these two shop samples she has just made. They are both from the book, Seasonal Skinnies. This book is full of small wall hangings and is just $12.95. Very good value. We have kits available for both of these cutees. You will be seeing more samples from this book.
Just as marathon runners have decals honoring their mileage run, Trish has this one for her sewing room. LOL
Retirement has been good for Trish's quilting productivity. This is a ribbon winning mini she entered in the Iowa State Fair.

Trish is using her half square triangles, collected in our exchange, to make this quilt. This is just one of the large blocks. We look forward to watching this quilt grow.

Trish also shared this T-Shirt quilt she made for her husband. Cute.

These small quilts, above and below, are by Nancy H. She's having fun getting things done! The quilt below uses some of the half square triangle units she gathered in our exchange.

and another baby quilt done for her Baby Maker stash.

Teresa made this quilt using the Snowball Blocks from our group exchange. We have all agreed to work through some of these collections before starting another one!

Here is a close up to show Teresa'a machine quilting. She went through the quilt with a gentle meander and then started over, echoing her first stitches to make this very cool ribbon look in the machine quilting.

Diane shared this baby quilt she just finished that is a reproduction of a baby quilt her mother made - - a few years ago. Very special.

Diane also shared this quilt top she found when out junking. We found a near replica of this in a quilt history book, dating this top to 1875 - 1900. She bought it for $15 from someone who obviously did not know what they had. It will be well taken care of now.
Jackie O made another quilt for her charity honoring Adel Alumni. Nice.

Marti shared this farm quilt she has been working on for a bit. So fun and so much to look at.

A closeup shows the flange she used with the binding to separate the plaids in both border and binding. Great idea.

She also reported on a fun class she took recently on value and color placement. This is her class project.

I did a demo on a block featured by Missouri Star Quilts, the Hidden Pinwheel Block and the Hidden Hour Glass Block. Kind of squint to see this is a large pinwheel that has been cut into a 9-patch.

Rearrange the pieces to make this block - no waste.

This block was originally an Hour Glass block. It's been cut into a 9 Patch and rearranged to make this fun star. You can google these blocks to see an online video at Missouri Star Quilts. Very fun and absolutely no waste.

Before having a snack, we did some prize drawing. Nancy was thrilled to receive this pattern for a yo-yo jacket. We look forward to her modeling this for us soon.

Thank you as always for volunteering as our photographer, Jackie O!

Customer Show and Tell

Donna brought in her finished woven quilt. This is a jelly roll friendly pattern and is easier than it may look. We have the pattern and the jelly rolls in stock now. Very pretty, Donna. Thanks for sharing.

Here are the next 3 blocks. Be sure to check back the 15th of each month for 3 more blocks.

Janet's Moda Shuffle

Janet V. brought this in to show us. These are blocks from the Moda Shuffle bom that we post here on the 15th of each month. Janet set it together with fabric she had in her stash and added the flying geese border. Isn't this a pretty and happy quilt? Thanks for sharing, Janet.

Sisters of the Cloth Sept 17

Here comes another gathering of the Sisters of the Cloth, Saturday Sept 17 at 10 am - Adel Library.

Our program is a trunk show of beautiful quilts from the 1800s presented by Jannette Harms.

and here's a peek at our Sister's September block pattern

This year, Sister's members have been playing with diamond shapes, making Star Flower blocks, seen here pieced to make a Seven Sisters block.

If you are not already a member, you can join us for $15 a class but don't forget to bring your vintage quilt show and tell!

Whimsical Flower Garden

Judy Williams just finished her magic on this quilt top, even designing her own border applique. The picture does not do the color justice. This is a very bright and happy quilt. We were going for a kind of a whimsical Mary Engelbreit look. I think she nailed it!

This applique block of the month will be on display (after quilting) in October.  We will start taking registration then so we can order patterns and make sure we have sufficient fabric in stock.

The actual distribution of blocks is scheduled to start in January.

We sure had a nice time meeting this quilt group from Shenandoah this week. We served them cookies while they watched a couple demos and then they left with bags full of quilting goodies. Come again some day, gals!

IMPORTANT NOTICE

September Quilt Circle is one week earlier this month, Monday, September 12, 6 pm in the shop. Bring your show and share and join us!

My recent Sunday Sewday included this little red and white mini. I used the Flying Geese Four at a Time method, making quick work of it.

I also made these two little zip bags, both from Lazy Girl Designs.
This along with some long arm quilting made for a very nice day in my sewing room.

A Labor or Love

My sister and I delivered 13 lap quilts to the Community Care Center in Stuart last week. These were quilts made as a challenge for the Iowa Quilters Group, an online group.

I was the lucky winner that got to bring all of these quilts home with me and choose a facility to donate.

We decided to donate to this care center in memory of the fine care given to our mother, Marian Beaman, a resident there at the end of her life.

She was a life long quilter and retired from this facility in the 90s as their activity director. While the director, she organized several quilt shows, hanging quilts down the residence halls and displaying them in the dining hall.

Shown in this picture is the present activity director and a couple residents. It was very heart warming to hear their comments. They loved the quilts and it brought back memories of their own family quilters.

What a great summer it has been!

Starting with the All Iowa Shop Hop on June 1 and ending with the Row by Row Experience Tuesday, it has been a really fun summer around here.

That's right, Tuesday is the last day to pick up your free row patterns and purchase kits.

We are planning for a fun day on Tuesday (Sept 6) to bid farewell to the summer activities. A quilt group from Shenandoah will be here early afternoon and we have demos prepared to share with them.

Stop in Tuesday, pick up your BOM, grab your free pattern, kit and license plate, have a snack and let us practice our demo on you.

Here are the official dates from the  Row by Row Experience website:

Happy Birthday, Brook!

Tomorrow is Labor Day and we will be open from 10 am to 2 pm We are closing early to spend time with family. Come in early to get your quilt fixens.
Our Chicago daughter is celebrating a birthday tomorrow, shown here with brother Gabe at a Cubs game this summer. Can you believe these two have the same parents?

Jenny's Sunday Sewday!

Jenny O. sent me these pictures from her recent Sunday Sewday. This is a comfort quilt she put together from the Jelly Roll Race pattern for a co-worker who is mourning the loss of her mother while also going through breast cancer treatment.

All of the other co-workers signed the label on the back. Beautiful.

Notice the Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon in this machine quilting design done by local long arm quilter, Deb S.

We have a nice assortment of fall flannels in blues, grays, tans and browns.

Lonnie made this guy quilt from a flannel layer cake. Available in kit, of course!

You may remember this one from the same pattern, Stacked Rectangles.

A visit to Michele's studio - - -

is always a treat. I stopped by to look at some long arm rulers and came home with two very nice ones.
Those of you who know Michele know that she never shies away from a challenge. This is a quilt she has been asked to make out of dance costumes! The request was that it had to be the tumbling blocks pattern. Well, she got it done - - - pieced at least. I have no doubt she will get it quilted perfectly as well.

Sunday Sew Day!

I pretty much sewed all day Sunday. It was fun because I didn't have any deadline sewing to do. I could just pick up what ever needed finished.

This was a shop demo I cut out quite some time ago. Now that I wanted to sew it up, there didn't seem to be enough parts.

Friend Lorna suggested I try this setting instead, using less 60 degree triangles. Good save! Thanks, Lorna.
I had also cut these 60 degree pieces and then decided it didn't work as well so just sewed them together to make this table mat. Both items will likely go into our annual sale for the library.

State Fair Winner recognized

This year, we sponsored 3rd place winners at the Iowa State Fair, recognizing that third place quilts in large categories are still really awesome. Emily Vardeman came in yesterday with the Gift Certificate she won. Here is her quilt, 3rd place in the large quilt category.
This was a block of the month quilt designed by Leila Gardunia. The inspiration for the design is the quilt blocks that adorn the Jacobson Building on the Iowa State Fair grounds. Isn't this fantastic? You can read more about the designer at sewnbyleila.blogspot

This is the quilter, Emily V. on the left with friend Jessie Z, both members of the Des Moines Modern Quilt Guild.  Nice to meet you, Emily. Thanks for coming in.
