A thank you note for our Angel Tree gifts

Supporters,

I hope you all enjoyed a happy and healthy Christmas holiday that included eating too many sugar cookies, watching too many episodes of “The Christmas Story” and sharing too many laughs with friends and family.  May you all be blessed with good health and a joyous heart as we enter into a new year.

I want to thank each one of you for making a difference in the lives of the 449 victims, survivors and their families that were adopted through our program this year.  That is a truly incredible number of people reached. Thank you.

As our clients have needs throughout the year, please contact me if you wish to be involved with other donations or as a volunteer in the new year.  Otherwise, I will keep you all on my list for next year.

Together we can make a difference,

Christmas with the kids - - -

Christmas Day, we gathered at the home of Willow and Seth. Above are daughters Brook and Willow, SIL Seth, Frank and I and son Gabe. Of course the grand kids are in the mix, Jackson, Calvin and Oliva.

Then on Sunday, the Beamans gathered at our home. Here is just a handful of the youngest generation. If they had all been here, we would have needed a larger couch!
Grandpa Frank had fun entertaining grand kids. It seemed that he repeatedly forgot they were in the chair and almost sat on them, much to their dismay, over and over. Cal kept yelling "do dat den!"

We had soup and finger foods. Here is a recipe my sister sent me for potato soup. Big hit but not really healthy.

Potato Soup

Par boil 8 to 10 potatoes, peeled and chopped
Cook and crumble 1# of bacon
Chop 1 small onion and soften in bacon drippings

In crock pot, mix:
2 - 10 oz cans of Cream of Chicken soup
2 C milk
1- 8 oz carton French Onion dip
1 stick butter
1/2 of bacon crumbles
onion
potatoes
salt and pepper
Cook on low for 8 hours

Add 8 oz of shredded swiss cheese and the rest of the bacon and heat another 30 minutes.

Flavor improves if reheated. Can add more milk as needed. Yeilds 10 servings.

And another hand made Christmas gift:
Willow made a dozen or more children's aprons and paired them with cookie mix and a wooden spoon to make gift bags for little cousins and friends.

There was one super hero apron leftover for Jackson to wear as he helped make Christmas cookies.

We're already looking forward to next Christmas!

Keep em coming - -

Marge P shares this pic with us. Her Mother-in-law will appreciate this table topper as a gift from Marge.
Marge also followed up on a gift idea we presented at our Ladies of the Lake Quilt Retreat this fall. - - Re-cycle candy packaging into a very cute little zip bag.

She used regular fabric for the back. Very cute packaging for a small gift, right?

Another from Jenny O. This pillowcase will go to a big Mickey Mouse fan in her family. Sweet.

Crockpot Italian Chicken

This is a recipe my sister sent me. She says it is really good. Sounds good!

Crockpot Italian Chicken
4 chicken breasts
1 packet Zesty Italian dressing seasoning
8 oz. cream cheese, softened
2 cans cream of chicken soup
1 t. garlic powder
1 pkg. pasta

Add all ingredients except pasta to crockpot.  Cook on high for 4 hours. If sauce is too thick, add milk.  when ready to serve chicken, cook pasta & drain. Add pasta to chicken/sauce in crockpot and toss together.   We had the pasta on the side and it was still very good.

More of your show and share - - -

Jenny O's father in law recently passed. Along with lots of great memories, he also left behind lots of flannel shirts. Jenny transformed them into memory pillows.
Jenny made several of these to send to her sister in laws, nieces and nephews.

e
This is the back. The label reads, "This is a shirt I used to wear. Whenever you hold it, know that I am there. Love, Grandpa"

That is so special. Thank you for sharing, Jenny.

Your show and share!

Sue Hook from Missouri sent me these pictures. She made bean-bag chairs for her granddaughters. Aren't these cute? She bought the fabric at AQDG Co!

I know many of you are finishing up gifts this weekend (as I will be). Send me a pic to post.

More hand made gifts.

More hand made Christmas gifts - - - - I made these for our staff, Lonnie and Colleen, choosing fabrics I knew they like. I also made one for Julia in jewel tone batiks but, since she is a snowbird already flown south, she got hers early.

I love making these. Now that I have made 7, they go together quickly. I have made a few modifications like reversing the direction of the pockets, adding a pen holder loop and using E6000 glue rather than screws.

This is the open, inside view. The one on the left is not yet glued to the frame in this photo, so looks a bit crooked. I'll make sure it is straight before I glue.

I will say I had a couple of frames made by Sisters Common Thread that were faulty. They were color Gun Metal and did not close properly. I contacted the company and they said they had a bad batch and are in contact with the manufacturer. If you purchased frames made by Sisters Common Thread from our shop that are faulty, we will return them for replacement.

Another hand made gift

This is a friends Granddaughter. This little girl is also related to a photographer and was, therefore, selected to model for the Quilts and More magazine, Winter 2015 issue.
As a prop, she didn't get to keep the pillow so Grandma asked me to make another one to give her for Christmas.  Isn't this cute? It covers a 16" pillow form and can be made in an afternoon.

Hand Made Gifts

Are you making any of your holiday gifts? Send me a picture to post.
Here are some of the gifts I made this weekend. These oven mitts are backed with pre-quilted thermal fabric. A couple of spatulas inserted in the front pocket complete the gift.

New stuff!

New! Digitally printed fabric. Digital printing, allows for the use of an unlimited number of colors. Very pretty stuff.

And here is Fancy Fox in a 20" pillow. The pattern also has options to make a large wall hanging or a quilt.

New from Moda, charms and cakes in Hometown Girl. Love the top print. The rest of the packs are really nice, usable batik prints as well.

These little organizers are perfect for the sewing friends in your life. Made from a canvas like fabric, the are just $4.99 each and come in green, pink and brown.

And fun reminder - this panel comes with 8 gift tags printed along the bottom edge of the panel. I fuse these on Timtex and then cut with pinking blade. Makes a great touch to any gift.

Here is a close up.

Quilts in the Sanctuary

Here are a few pictures I took today while setting up for this annual holiday quilt show Sunday, always such a lovely site.

Here is the matriarch of the show, Margaret Beal. She is standing behind a spread of baby quilts that were made by her small church group of quilting friends.  These will soon be delivered to a local hospital for children. Such a special ministry.

Time for an annual chat with Santa. Calvin is hesitant,as expected, but his brother and sister enjoyed it. I think he should be more concerned about the Christmas tree with hands that is standing right behind him! Could reach out and grab him at any second.

Friday and Saturday, come sign up for another basket of goodies, valued $100, including the brand new Needle Travel book. We have lots of little holiday gift items in stock and, to thank you for shopping with us, the more you spend, the more times you get to sign up for the drawing!

Friday evening, 5 to 7 pm, is the Adel Holiday Open House of Businesses. Follow the luminaries from door to door and pick up a snack and the recipe for it. All of the recipes will be printed on matching cards so you can end the evening with a nice little set of recipe cards.

For the wee ones, Santa will be in town and ready to pose for pictures while his elves are doing face painting.

Best part of the evening? It's supposed to be fairly pleasant out!

We are serving Corn Dog Muffins, a little state fair in December.
It's always a fun time of the season and we look forward to your visit.

More?

Sunday, from 11:30 to 3 pm there is a quilt show in the sanctuary of the Adel First Christian Church. After viewing the quilts, plan to go down to the lower level for a festive holiday lunch of soups and desserts. The dining area is arranged in the center of a circle of decorated trees. Adopted by members, each tree is decorated with a different theme.

Photo from past years show.

Giving Tuesday

Tomorrow, December 1, is #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration, and we hope that you will join us in helping kids feel better to heal better!

TAKE THE #GIVINGSMILES CHALLENGE AND PASS IT ON

A hospital experience can be terrifying for both a child and his or her family. Our founder, Cindy, and her husband, Gavin Kerr, know just how terrifying the experience was for Ryan, their girls and for each of them. Like many families who experience traumatic health care experiences, they suffer from symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) that challenge them to this day. They are not alone!
▪ 49% of adolescents develop mild to severe symptoms of PTS following cancer treatment
▪ 30% of young hospital patients develop severe PTS symptoms following a serious illness
▪ 42% of mothers of cancer patients develop symptoms of PTS post treatment
▪ 25% of siblings develop moderate to severe symptoms of PTS
In addition to providing bright, colorful pillowcases to give hospitalized children an emotional boost, we recently partnered with experts at the Center for Pediatric Traumatic Stress to develop resources and tools to help entire families better understand and cope with the difficult experience.
Our goal for the #GivingSmiles Challenge is to raise $10,000 to help us support our newly expanded mission and initiatives. Please donate as much or as little as you can, and help us spread the word and raise awareness by sharing the #GivingSmiles Challenge on social media and with friends and family.
