May Quilt Circle of Friends

May was snowball block exchange month. Each chose a crayola color at a previous meeting to determine what color to make their exchange blocks.
Then we went around the circle and shared items made for our library fund raiser sale on June 20 (during the outdoor quilt show) - - - holiday candle mats, bags, quilts and more!

Joyce S. is using up scraps to make baby quilts, above and below.

Lonnie shared this cute purse she made. This is the same pattern she used to make our bag featuring the new Iowa fabric.
Nancy H. made this quilt for newly wed friends of the family. She calls these quilts "Baby Makers".

Next, Deb gave us an update on her Iowa Comfort Quilts non-profit organization, sharing these quilts made by Jackie O and more pillowcases.

Deb is collecting as many pillowcases as possible for the domestic violence center. Ask us for a free pattern if you would like to make some pillowcases for ICQ.

Diane shared her favorite finger pin cushion used for hand stitching.
Diane told us these are easy to make so, I looked up the pattern. Find it at this link.

Margaret shared these two quilts she finished up. These were both patterns and/or kits from our Sisters of the Cloth 2014 program.

The 2015 program starts in July and registration is open, $35 for all three classes (3rd Saturdays in July, September and November)

These 9-patch blocks are from a block exchange we did at Sisters of the Cloth. Love this little quilt.

This is a kit quilt that Margaret just finished up. See close up next.

Celia brought 2 granddaughters to our May meeting. Maddie has been coming for a while but this is the first meeting for her cousin, Kaitlyn.

Kaitlyn has been sewing with Grandma Celia for a while, though. Here are two quilts she has made, above and below. Quite impressive, right?

Janet V shared this scrappy quilt. This is from our Scrappy New Year page on this blog.

This is a very fun panel that Barb G. shared. It's a baby quilt for her great grand child.

I shared a few fun patterns and techniques that I picked up at Quilt Market earlier this month.

I demonstrated the ruler, Folded Corner Trimmer. It adds accuracy to making half squares, flying geese units, corner squares or binding strips while at the same time, trimming dog ears. Pretty slick.

We snacked on cupcakes and called it a day. Thanks as always to Jackie O. for the pictures.

Lonnie just whipped up this purse from the new AISH fabrics. Here is the front view. She used fusible fleece for the stabilizer.

And here is the back view. Essential pockets inside, of course. This pattern is also written with the option of using 2 1/2" strips. Isn't this adorbs?!

All Iowa Samples

There are several of us stitching fast and furious, making samples from the 2015 All Iowa Shop Hop fabric. Here are the first couple.

A quiet book with chalk cloth on the inside.

It folds closed and has an outside pocket for chalk and eraser.

And here's our new Kindle Cover.

Made with Soft and Stable interfacing, it makes the perfect little enclosure to protect and store your E-reader

Next is a curtain I made for the shop inside door.

From the two yard piece used above, I trimmed enough selvage to make this little zipped coin purse.

And how cute is this table runner? Jenny O made this for us. It uses a 60 degree ruler.

This fabric came this week and we are just getting started. Lonnie is working on a bag and a table topper. Jenny is working on some cute placemats and I have a large quilt on the design wall so watch for more to come soon!

You can call to order kits or fabric now. 515-993-1170. Pick up starts with the All Iowa Shop Hop in just 8 days! June 1!

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday today to Shop Girl and Friend, Colleen Eckhoff. There may be a few too many candles on this cake :)

Where the Cows Come Home

I wrote the post, shown earlier today, before going to quilt market and scheduled it to post today.

This is a post-quilt market update. I happened across Kathy Cardiff from The Cottage at Cardiff Farms, one of the designers for this book, in her booth where she was promoting this block of the month. I chatted with her for a bit and then took this picture.

Taken with my cell phone, it's not the best picture but notice the quilt hanging behind her. Also notice that she has just framed one of the blocks in a barn board frame. How appropriate.
We will kick off this block of the month with a machine applique class, probably in August. I think this will be a popular and fun project!

New book - written for a 9 month block of the month quilt. We are considering this for a bom to start in August. Barns are sure popular around here! Get your book now and look it over.

Afternoon Delight update

Lonnie has just finished cutting the block of the month kits for Afternoon Delight. Phew! Was that a big job! And she does it with such fantastic organizational skill. Miles and miles of cutting, folding, labeling, packaging and shipping. Thank you, Lonnie!!

You know what that means? All if these lovely batiks that we have been holding for this project are now on the shelves.

Need some to make pillows, valances, dresser runners, seat covers, quilt back or just because it is beautiful - - it is now available.

Return From Quilt Market

Diana W and I are just home from International Quilt Market in Minneapolis. We came back with lots of inspiration and ideas, ordered new fabrics, picked up new patterns and notions, attended several seminars featuring the top designers and had an all around great time.
This picture was taken at the Moda booth. They had a photo booth and a box full of goofy hats or boas to put on for your own "selfie".

Scrappy New Year - May 15

Let's re-cap. We started by building this little lap quilt, Holy Scrap, and finished it up last month.

Some of us are starting with this quilt as our inspiration for a larger quilt, though. We have made all of the sections shown above but are making them longer. We need to go wider as well.

To go wider, for starters, I am sashing my sections together. Adding the sashing strips also helps organize the quilt a bit. And I am making more pieced units.

I laid all the pieced sections out and auditioned a variety of colors for the sashing. Looking at a quilt through a camera lens helps get the best view of how it will look sewn up.

Once the sashing fabric is selected, I will cut sashing strips 2 1/2" wide. If you are making a larger quilt, it will take 2 strips for each row of sashing. I like to stitch all of my sashing strips together, end-to-end, measure the length of the center unit and trim all of the required sashing strips the exact same length. That will help keep you quilt squared up.

Stitch a sashing strip to each side of the Seminole pieced unit before trimming the points off.

Just for reference, this is the Seminole pieced section.

Lay the sashing strip on the pieced section, right sides together as shown below. I experimented a little but found it easiest to stitch accurately with the sashing strip on top as I fed the unit under my presser foot for stitching

First, notice where the fabrics overlap. This is your 1/4" seam allowance.

The sashing strip lines up with the "v" edge of the red setting squares.

Above, I have drawn a line where the stitching will be.
After stitching, lay a ruler along the raw edge and trim off the excess points. Press all seams toward the sashing strip.
Our assignment this past month was to gather up spare parts and pieces from around the sewing room. Here are some of mine - -

These are nine-patches left over from a block exchange, all made in civic war era fabrics.

These are half square units left over from another group block exchange. These are all brights and blacks.

And these are 5" squares of Civil War era fabrics from yet another group exchange.

I worked these units into my long pieced sections, sprinkling in the brights between the civil war prints to make sure the quilt looked balanced with the center sections.

As the quilt grew, I realized I could use more units up by making more pieced sections. The quilt started to get wider than it was long, though! Remedy,- - -  I turned my quilt so the rows will be horizontal rather than vertical. Now it is a bed-size quilt which is what I prefer.

Next, see a few of my units laid out with red sashing strips.

This next picture is all of my pieced sections laid out with black sashing strips. Which one do you prefer?

I am leaning toward the black. Why? First, I do think it helps organize this very scrappy quilt. But, also because I already have these cut strips leftover from a Strip Club project we did in the shop.

That's it for this project. Check back next month for some more Scrappy New Year chat and don't forget to send me your pictures and scrappy comments.

UPDATE!!!

Our shipment of All Iowa Shop Hop magazines just arrived!! Come and get yours today. They are just $5 each and at least twice the size of previous issues.

All Iowa Shop Hop Fabric and Magazine

We have just received word that the All Iowa Shop Hop fabrics and 2015 magazine will ship the end of this week! We are very excited to get started on shop samples just as soon as the fabric arrives.

This is the cover of the new AISH magazine. New this year, it includes six patterns that were selected from a contest of Iowa designers. You can expect these to be  considerably better patterns than hosted in this magazine in the past. Plus it boasts over 100 pages this year including fun articles, shop hop map and passport.

The 2015 AISH Magazine also acts as a year-round quilt shop directory.

I don't know of many quilt shop directories that sell for $5 or many patterns that sell for less than $4 each so this magazine is a real value.

AISH participants may also download the Passport and a basic shop directory for free from the www.alliowashophop.com website.

As if birthdays don't age us enough - - -

Jackson likes to sit on the front step with Grandpa Feenk. Frank told him "The truck across the street is a telephone truck". Jackson asked, "What's a telephone?"

Mother's Day 2015 --  Did you know . . .

Mother's Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of Mother's Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday's commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother's Day most commonly falls on the second Sunday in May and traditionally involves presenting mothers with flowers, cards and other gifts.

You Know You're a Mother When ...
You count the sprinkles on each kid's cupcake to make sure they're equal.
You have time to shave only one leg at a time.
You hide in the bathroom to be alone.
Your kid throws-up and you catch it.
Someone else's kid throws up at a party. You keep eating.
As you cling to the high moral ground on toy weapons; your child chews his toast into the shape of a gun.
You hope ketchup is a vegetable, since it's the only one your child eats.
You find yourself cutting your husband's sandwiches into cute shapes.
You hear your mother's voice coming out of your mouth when you say, "NOT in your good clothes!"
You stop criticizing the way your mother raised you.
You donate to charities in the hope that your child won't get that disease.
You hire a sitter because you haven't been out with your husband in ages, then spend half the night checking on the kids.
You use your own saliva to clean your child's face.

You say at least once a day, "I'm not cut out for this job", but you know you wouldn't trade it for anything".

Olivia

This is from the fabric line, "Olivia" so I had to make a little dress for Olivia! I found this pattern on Pinterest. The bodice is cut from a recycled t-shirt.

In fact, the pattern was designed for the entire dress to be cut from a t-shirt. I think I will try that next for a very comfortable little summer dress.

Our Olive loves dresses. Here she is in her Easter dress which, I am told, she decided would also be her jammies that night.

National Teacher's Day!

Carol brought this little wall hanging in to show me. She replicated this from a picture that was given to her by a student when she was teaching. She will finish it up and give it back to him (now a young adult). What a perfect way to recognize National Teacher's Day.

Both my sister and my sister in law are retiring from public school education this spring. Big thank you to each of them and to teachers everywhere for lifetime of devotion and dedication, making a difference in the lives of their students.
