QC February 2020

As we cancel our March meeting to help mitigate the spread of COVID 19, I realize I did not post the February meeting pics!

Here's Bonnie, modeling the socks she received in our holiday party sock exchange. Aren't they perfect for her?

We had so much fun at our January holiday party, we forgot to take the annual sock exchange picture so this was our attempt at a redo. Not everyone remembered to bring their socks but here are a few.

We welcomed new friends and then round the circle we went with our show and share.

The Puppy Quilt Back

You may have seen Flo's new pattern, The Puppy Quilt. But, have you seen the back? She had two extra squares not used in the front so she pieced them into the back. Isn't this cute?

This is a little story we added to the back of The Puppy Quilt pattern jacket, a tribute to our Max. Many of you will remember him as our blog mascot before grandkids.

Hello. My name is Max. That stands for Mighty Warrior, Ardent Hunter and X-ceptional Snuggler. I am a Yorkshire Terrier and this is my story.

I was born to some folks that did not appreciate my high  energy. They thought smacking me with a newspaper would calm me. When it did not, they sent me off to a homeless shelter. I quickly made friends but it was lonely.  I wanted a family to protect.

One day, my luck changed and I went to live in a fun home with a college student named Willow. She was loving and caring and I almost completely forgot about my first owner but, - - - newspapers! Keep thee away from me!

I loved  my new owner and she loved me back. I tagged along when she married the love of her life and moved us all to a nice big house. Soon the house was filled with children.  That’s when the tables turned. Even though I was surrounded by love, it was now my turn to experience the challenge of living with high energy.

Since smacking the kids with a newspaper was frowned on,  I went home to Chicago with Willow’s sister, Brook, for a couple week respite. That two week vacation turned into 6 years of just me and her. It was great. But soon, my “dogs were really barking” as you humans say and I needed a lot of tender care. B was there for me and I was there for her. We were a team.

When the time came for me to move on, I did my best to help Brook and Willow be brave. Now they each have parts of me in a little container on their fireplace mantles. I was careful not to leave the stinky parts behind.

If I could speak in human words, I would say, “Thanks for saving me Willow and thanks for helping me move on, Brook. I lo - - - SQUIRREL!! Gotta go!”

Sunday Sewday

I did a bit of chillaxin on Sunday which included making this tote from a t-shirt for a school auction.

Here's a close up to show I was able to incorporate the neckline of the t-shirt into the top edge of the tote. Using pe-made handles made quick work of it. My grands are Story City Norsemen.
And to follow up with Monday and and Tuesday sewing, I made these little zip totes to help enhance the value of this auction item. The smallest bag hangs from the handle so it can be flipped to the bag inside for keys or cell phone.

Charity Quilting

Here is a charity quilt Flo made.  It's from a kit, provided by the volunteers for Warrior Wagons, where they assemble wagons full of comfort gifts (including a quilt) and supplies for children and their families in treatment.

If you would like to piece one of these tops, let us know and we will get you hooked up with a pre-cut kit.

Baby got back!

We've been repurposing and getting creative with backs around here.

This is the back of a large pillow. We have these light-weight canvas panels in stock in 4 different designs. The front of this pillow is a pieced unicorn from Elizabeth Hartman Designs.

I can't show you the front until Saturday at our big reveal but - - - here is the back of our new Strip Club project. The solid color pieces were originally planned for part of the quilt front but I changed my mind and made the quilt in all blacks and whites so these leftover parts and pieces went on the back.

This is the back of a new shop sample quilt. It gives purpose to these large fabric plates I have collected during the past Row x Row events, each covered with customer autographs, both local and world-wide.
This is the back of another one you have to wait until Saturday to see! This is the back of our new applique' BOM.

The front is hand appliqued by Judy Williams but would also be cute done by machine applique'.

Diana Weirich will be here on Saturday doing demos and answering questions about machine applique'.

And here is another pieced back for a new pattern and kit we have to show you on Saturday! This quilt features a dog panel and there were a couple leftover blocks so Flo pieced them into the back.

And remember - if you sign up for our BOMs on Saturday, the first month is FREE!!

Oven Baked Stew

This is a recipe, shared by friends, that I served at our Quilt Circle Holiday Party a couple weeks ago. I baked it in a large roasting pan and it made about 20 servings.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef tenderloin steaks diced (I used stew meat and marinated it in the V8 juice overnight)
  • 8 potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 4 (12 ounce) cans of V8 juice
  • 3 cups diced carrots
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 tablespoons tapioca
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C).
  2. Stir beef, potatoes, V8 juice, carrots, celery, onion, tapioca, sugar, salt, and pepper together in a roasting pan; cover.

  3. Bake in preheated oven until beef and potatoes are tender, about 5 hours.

My notes: I baked it more like 7 hours and I added 2 bay leaves and 2 t dried rosemary. I served it with home baked dinner rolls. Now, that's comfort food.

More Customer Show and Share

Flo created this baby quilt, using only her stash. Sweet.

And this is a special request quilt from a 4 year old granddaughter. She said she wanted blue and white and a unicorn. This grandma really delivered, didn't she?
