Temperature Block Time

The average high temp in central Iowa for June was 86 degrees.  That makes our color for this month's block rosy red.

I have been noting the month on the color chart each month to help keep track of the order of the blocks.

Quilts and Plants? - Yes!

Here's a sneak peek at one of the gardens that will be on the Adel Garden Tour this Sunday, 2-4 pm.  Can you guess who is sponsoring this garden?

This garden has a couple special features. The VanHeukeloms have installed a drip irrigation system that delivers water directly to each plant at the rate of 1 gallon per hour. Very ingenious.  They also built an outdoor vegetable washing station that connects to a hose. Super cute and efficient.

Come early for the salad and dessert luncheon. Stay late for the Gardens to Grapes reception make-n-take at Penoach Winery.  And prayer for decent weather that day!

Tickets in person at Adel Quilting, Adel HealthMart or Harveys Flowers.  Online, snag tickets at Eventbrite.com - Easy to find when typing ADEL GARDEN TOUR in the search box.

Quilter's Garage Sale

Our dear friend Carol was a master at most any fiber art and the collection of fabric and supplies that she left behind reflects it.

Her children are hosting a garage sale of her collection this week at 1309 Grove St in Adel.  That's about 4 blocks north and 4 blocks west of the quilt shop.

Peruse some of the items for sale on Craigslist here.

The sale is this week, Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning at 9 am each day.

Stop by to see us and we will give you a free spool of thread!

Sister time.

Last weekend, I went to a concert at our local winery. Folks were scattered around in lawn chairs.

These two are sisters, working on a quilt together.  It's for their grandmother who said she would like to have it before she turns 90!  She is now 88.

It was really special to watch them chat and stitch. I couldn't resist a picture.

Masked Memories

New baby quilt kit created from a mask panel. Just $29.

It's backed with Moda's plush Fireside fabric. Actually, I pieced the back from two smaller remnants of Fireside. Eazy Peazy.

And there were left over mask pieces in the panel so I stitched them up into little zip pouches. These are 2-sided with a different mask piece on each side.

Ten Inch Tumber

Here's a fun way to use a layer cake pack of 10" squares. Using the 10" Tumbler Template, cut the whole packet into "tumblers".

I added some 10" squares from a 2nd pack to make the quilt even bigger, about 60" x 70".

Arrange your Tumblers in rows. I did 7 rows of 7 Tumblers per row.
Notice how the blocks are turned to oppose each other in each row. Wide ends matching and narrow ends matching.

I like to put a number sticker on the first block of each row on the design wall.

After you have the rows sewn together, you can trim the sides straight and/or add a border. I'm going to try binding it just like this. Watch for more - - maybe next week??

Of course, we have kits and Tumbler Templates.

Catch up

When I get away for a few days of stitching with friends, I like to grab several small things that just need a little finish up.

These are little zip bags I made from leftover panel squares from my mask quilt.

These are the back side of the zip bags. These would be nice little gifts for frontline workers.

Here's another zip bag made from a leftover piece from a stabilized t-shirt. The photo was from our back yard and was on fusible photo fabric but I don't recall why I had that. Decided this was a good place to use it though.

This is a 14" pillowcase made from a T-Shirt block.

And the back with a zipper to insert the pillow form.

Sewing with friends today

This is a T-Shirt quilt I started several years ago using son Gabe's coaching shirts.  It was done in pieces to use for teaching.  Well, hear it is at least all in one unit!

No sashing.  I just stabilized the back of the shirts and then cut them to the sizes required to make 4 long rows the same length.

Since it is now 54" wide, I will use Moda's Fireside plush for the back.
