Finishing old projects

In Quilt Circle of Friends, several years ago, we did a half square triangle exchange.  We each chose how to use them and I did use several in different projects but, for the most part, had little time to work on non-shop related quilts until now.

I have about 100 of these left and this is the layout I have been playing with.  Perfect steamy hot day project.

This picture helps me see what I want to move around.

Patty Pan Squash Recipe

Have you ever cooked with Pattypan Squash? A friend gave me a couple from her garden so I looked up a recipe. It was delish!

Bring 1" of water to a boil in a saucepan. Put in 6 squash an cover. Cook for about 10 minutes or until you can pierce with a fork. Cool and then cut off the top stem and scoop out all the bits of squash. Finely chop those bits and save for later.

Brown 6 slices of bacon and remove to paper toweling
Sautee 1/2 C chopped onion in bacon fat
Stir in finely chopped squash pieces
Stir in 1 1/2 C bread crumbs
Stir in 1/2 C Parmesan cheese
Crumble and stir in bacon
Salt and Pepper to taste

Tightly spoon stuffing into squash shells.

Cover loosely with tin foil and bake 350 for 10 minutes or until heated through.

This is a tender summer squash and you can eat the whole thing, shell and all.

Tribute Quilt

Masks for Frontline Iowa is an organization of volunteers that spun out of the onset of the Covid pandemic.

Volunteer quilt shops provided fabric to volunteer quilters who made masks. In all, 100,000 masks were made and provided to frontline workers in Iowa.

We were happy to collaborate with this organization and now they are putting together a tribute quilt.  They sent me these pieces, pre-cut from leftover mask material, to make this tribute block.

Each block has a white center and a yellow sash. I look forward to seeing this completed quilt and will share the pic of it here.

Thank you so much to the folks that stepped up and took on this mammoth project. The world needs more of you. - - - Quilter's getting together to get things done for the good of all.

Ater I took this picture, I went back and added "Adel, Iowa" but I put the block in the mail before I took a final picture.

I am not ready for it to be Fall yet BUT - - - -

I just ordered this pattern to audition for our October Ladies of the Lake Quilt Retreat.  It's a spin off of a Grandmother's Flower Garden with no templates. Easy to machine quilt.

The pattern is by Cory Yoder for Coriander Quilts, one of my favorite designers.

I may use fabrics in mine from another favorite designer, Kaffe Fassett.  I'll be encouraging you to be scrappy.

This is a charm pack friendly quilt.

A Little Show and Tell

It was so nice to gather again for a day of stitching at Open Sew last week.  For now, we are doing just one day but will play it by ear. Down the road, we may expand back to a two day event.

Bonnie has had this new lamp for a bit now. It's her "travel" lamp and she finally got to try it out.

Laurie Hews brought this top to show, made with fabric from the All Iowa Shop postcard fabric.

Most brought hand work to do since there for just one day. Marti worked on this embroidered cat quilt and defended her foliage that Bonnie said looked like poison ivy.

Deb sorted fabric to make pillowcases for a charity, Nancy spent the day cutting, Nikki and I each had binding projects going.

Another Show and Tell by Marti. This is a found and finished project she did during the Covid shut in.

Join us the 3rd Friday of each month. The library opens at 9 am so come any time after that.

Well - that was a fun day! Thanks to all the people, are there are LOTS of them, that help pull off the annual Sweet Corn Festival in Adel on the 2nd Saturday of August each year.

It's not over yet! Head on over to the park on the north side of town for an omelet breakfast this morning. Drive through and pick up or eat in the park.  Proceeds are for local family in need due to mounting health care related bills.

The Purple Girls

Here is another retreat picture I missed posting earlier but it's such a good one I don't want to leave it out.  These gals are affectionately known as The Purple Girls. They have been coming to our retreats for many years and it would not be the same without them!

Happy 10th Birthday to this tall drink of water today! Or is that Gaterade??

Meet our new manager for the Ladies of the Lake Quilt Retreat!

I am happy to announce that Amy Brandt (seen here with husband Josh and sons Oliver and Isaac) will take over managing the Ladies of the Lake Quilt Retreats, starting with the Spring 2022 event. Many of you have met her at our retreats but here is a little bio from to help you get more acquainted.

Amy is a young, motivated and inspired quilter. I am so happy to hand off to her so that I can retire and the retreat tradition can continue.

from Amy:
I began quilting in November 2012 after getting married so I had a hobby in small town Nebraska. I found my perfect creative outlet and ended up working at my local quilt store for 4 years before moving to Iowa in 2017.

I went on the All Iowa Shop Hop and ended up at Adel Quilting, where I learned about the Ladies of the Lake Quilt Retreat. I attended for the first time in the fall of 2017.

In 2018 I met Shelley Drauer, the new owner of the Iowa Quilt Block, and began working there.

I have met many talented area quilters and even made a handful of sample quilts for fabric designer Gerri Robinson of Planted Seed Designs for Riley Blake fabrics. Some of the quilt tops I have made for her have appeared at Quilt Market and Riley Blake's Garden of Quilts. My favorite quilt pattern is the clamshell.

I'm thrilled to be taking over the retreat and hope to maintain the integrity of the retreat we all know and love while also putting my own spin on it.

When I'm not quilting I'm taking care of my two little boys, Oliver (5) and Isaac (1). I can be reached by phone or text at 402-525-6266, or you can friend me on Facebook at facebook.com/amy.brandt489. I will be creating a Facebook page and email address for the retreat in the near future as well.

My retirement plan - - -

- - - started with our annual Kids Camp.
Porch Swing Selfie

Lunch picnic while Jack is at football camp

Followed by a little play in the creek

Next was a movie and a pizza party

Today started with a little Warrior paint. AKA sidewalk chalk mixed with water.

Always a blast with these three angels.

Sunday Sewday

I added block #8 to the stack of American Gatherings blocks (free weekly download from Primitive Gatherings web)

With 8 blocks done, I decided to start making the rows.

I found the Speckle fabric we have on the bolt, 108" wide (available at shopadelquilting.com) looked great. If I am careful when trimming the selvage off, I can get 2 horizontal sashing strips from each width of fabric.

Referring to the picture of the finished quilt, I made a guess that the sashes between the blocks are cut 2 1/2" wide and the horizontal sash between the rows is cut 3 1/2" wide,

Temperature Block - July

Turns out the July block falls in the same temp range as the June block did. The average high temperature in central Iowa for July was 86.1.

I decided to use the same fabrics but just switch out the placement a little.

Once again, here is the chart I have been following. Each month, I write the name of the month next to the color on this chart just in case I loose track of my block order.
